Get-Out-The-Vote Update
Last Saturday, September 14, members of All Saints’ joined dozens of volunteers from all parts of the city to participate in a community walk through East Austin’s Precinct 403. This action was mobilized by Central Texas Interfaith (CTI), a coalition of some fifty churches and religious congregations, workers groups, schools, and community service organizations. These diverse groups work together to promote their own institutional development and advance public policies that improve the well-being of the communities and families of Central Texas. The purpose of this community walk was to give residents non-partisan encouragement to vote in the upcoming elections.
Precinct 403 has historically had one of the lowest voter turnouts in Travis County, and has been one of the areas most under-served by local governments. The goal of the community walk was to raise the level of voter turnout. CTI’s get-out-the-vote initiative showed the connection between not voting and East Austin’s unequal share of public amenities, and raised awareness of the power that lies in mobilizing neighborhoods to vote.
All Saints’ delegation included Lauren Bornschein, Tracy Cornelius, April Floyd, Michael Floyd, Kay Hopper, Tim Irvine, Susie Mallett, Kendrah McDonald, Allan Myers, Erik Pankratz, Tom Pollan, and Daniel Thompson.
